The Clayton State University Department of Athletics is deeply saddened to share the passing of men’s soccer goalkeeper David Magala, a standout student-athlete and a valued member of the Laker family. David’s unexpected passing has left a profound void within the university community, especially among those who knew him best on and off the field.
Over the course of three seasons with the Lakers, Magala made an indelible mark on the men’s soccer program. The Tucker, Georgia native appeared in 24 matches, amassing 72 saves and recording five shutouts.
He ended his collegiate career with an impressive 12-4-5 record and a career goals-against average of just 1.3 per game. Known for his calm demeanor and athletic ability between the posts, David’s consistency and clutch performances were instrumental to the team’s success during his tenure.
David’s talents did not go unnoticed in the Peach Belt Conference. He was recognized twice as the PBC Goalkeeper of the Week, underscoring his high level of play and importance to the Lakers’ defense. More than just stats, David’s leadership and confidence inspired those around him, both teammates and coaches alike.
A cornerstone of the team’s recent achievements, Magala played a crucial role as the Lakers reached back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances—an accomplishment not seen at Clayton State in two decades. His most memorable moments came in postseason play, where he delivered under pressure.
In 2023, he stopped a crucial penalty kick to help the Lakers defeat Lenoir Rhyne. He repeated that feat in 2024, helping the team advance past Converse in another penalty shootout. These defining saves highlighted his poise in high-stakes moments and solidified his legacy as one of the program’s premier goalkeepers.
Off the field, David was equally dedicated. A Criminal Justice major, he was named to the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll in recognition of his academic success.
In addition to his responsibilities as a student-athlete, David served proudly as a Sergeant in the Georgia Army National Guard, demonstrating a level of discipline, service, and leadership beyond his years. He was known among his peers for his humility, work ethic, and quiet strength.
David’s journey in soccer began at Tucker High School, where he led his team to a 9-0-1 record as a senior before the season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also helped guide Tucker to the quarterfinals of the Georgia State Championships during both his sophomore and junior years, proving himself early on as a dependable and driven competitor.
David Magala’s passing is a heartbreaking loss not only for Clayton State University but also for the broader soccer and military communities he touched. He was a teammate, a student, a soldier, and above all, a young man with a bright future who exemplified resilience and character.
